Upright Meaning
Something is ending — and something new will rise from it. Death in tarot is almost never literal. It is the great transformer: the force that clears what has outlived its purpose so that fresh life can take its place. Let go. The new chapter cannot begin until the old one is closed.
Reversed Meaning
Resistance to necessary change, stagnation, or clinging to the past. You may be refusing to let something die that has already ended.
Symbolism & Story
The skeleton knight in black armor rides a white horse through a field. Before him, kings and paupers alike fall. A bishop prays. A child offers flowers. A young woman turns away. In the background, the sun rises between two pillars — the same pillars as the High Priestess and Justice. Death is not the end of the sun. It is the end of this particular day.
